Steel Group Gears For Rapid Growth

A RECENT arrival at the bustling Thornton Industrial Estate, the Newcastle branch of the Southern Steel Group Pty Ltd is part of the largest privately owned, independent steel distributor in the country.
Southern Steel Supplies distributes products from BHP in Port Kembla and Whyalla to industries throughout the Hunter Region and the Central Coast.
Branch manager Mike Loane said the central location was a major advantage to the business.
`We were running a truck service up from Sydney until we had the steel in the warehouse on the site here,' Mr Loane said.
`Now we have trucks going in and out all the time.'
The branch has 14 six-metre bays on site at Thornton with room for expansion.
`I think the growth will be fairly quick.'
