THE first liquid steel was cast from BHP's billet caster in South Australia yesterday, which will eventually source Newcastle's rod, bar and wire mills.

After Newcastle's steelworks close in September, the Whyalla plant will supply Newcastle with 750,000 tonnes of steel billets each year.
