THE closure of BHP's Newcastle steelworks will no longer be delayed two weeks by the boiler explosion in April.

The plant will close down as originally planned on September 30.

BHP spokesman Bob Cook said a new $88million steel billet caster at Whyalla in South Australia had come on line sooner than expected and officials were happy with its production.
