Major BHP strikes in the past 12 months:

STEELWORKS:

December 22, 1999 - About 1500 workers at Whyalla, South Australia, steelworks strike for 24 hours.

January 12, 2000 - Four thousand workers at Port Kembla steelworks strike for 24 hours.

November 9 - Five thousand workers at Port Kembla steelworks strike for 24 hours.

IRON ORE MINES:

January 18, 2000 - Four-day stoppages begin in Pilbara, WA. Police use batons against unionists and seven union officials are arrested.

COALMINES:

January 20, 2000 - Thousands of workers employed at BHP's Queensland coalmines strike for 24 hours.

February 7 - Snap 24-hour strike by 4000 miners at 10 BHP black-coal mines in Queensland and NSW.

August 28 - About 1000 workers at five BHP coal mines in two states strike for 48 hours.

September 25 - About 800 coalminers at BHP's Appin, Tower and Cordeaux mines in the Illawarra begin a three-day strike.

October 9 - About 500 workers at three BHP coal operations in Queensland begin a five-day strike.

October 18 - Coalminers at Appin, Tower and Cordeaux mines walk off the job for seven days.
