Auiron Energy is to spend a further $5 million to expand its Whyalla pig-iron demonstration plant in an effort to significantly cut the construction costs of a commercial plant.
The funds will be used to remove bottlenecks at the South Australian Steel and Energy (SASE) plant to enable it to run at up to three times its original designed capacity of two tonnes an hour.
A series of ``high intensity" tests will determine how fast the plant can operate. ``If we can do that, it would reduce the scale-up risks when we go to a commercial plant and would also reduce the cost and financing charges," Auiron managing director Neil Arthur said yesterday.
He said the demonstration plant had already been run at up to 3.5 tonnes an hour for short periods.
